What is PageRank?
PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a
page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to
another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other
page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important
the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is
casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is.
Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it.
How important each vote is is taken into account when a page's
PageRank is calculated.
PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It
matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page's
ranking in the search results. It isn't the only factor that
Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.
From here on in, we'll occasionally refer to PageRank as
"PR".
Notes:
Not all links are counted by Google. For instance, they filter
out links from known link farms. Some links can cause a site to
be penalized by Google. They rightly figure that webmasters
cannot control which sites link to their sites, but they can
control which sites they link out to. For this reason, links into
a site cannot harm the site, but links from a site can be harmful
if they link to penalized sites. So be careful which sites you
link to. If a site has PR0, it is usually a penalty, and it would
be unwise to link to it.
It is amazing how much the search
engines focus on links. In order to compete for highly
competitive keyword phrases you have to have incoming
links in droves. Long gone are the days where simply
raising your keyword density and prominence could get you
a top ranking. While this (on page seo) can still work
for less competitive keywords, it is not enough for the
top terms.
The great thing about links is anyone can
exchange links with other websites! While very few have
taken the time to learn the ins and outs of search
enginge optimization, anyone can build strong relevant
link partners for their site. I am sure you've seen
those ebooks that tell you the easy way to a top ten
ranking is getting links. Well this is actually true!
Ok so your website is new and your google pagerank is
a big fat 0! No one wants to trade with your site
because of your pagerank. What do you then do? The
answer is directories. Find and submit your site to as
many directories relevant to your site as you can find.
Most will ask for a link back, but some won't!
Eventually you'll find enough places to submit your site
and you'll get some pr to your site. Once you get a
pagerank of at least 2 or 3 then sites with similar
pagerank will trade with you.
So you've now submitted your site to a good handful
of relevant directories, and you waited for the Google
update. You are amazed that you now have some
pagerank. Maybe it's only 2 or 3 but it is no longer a
whopping zero! You are excited and feel empowered.
You rush to check those rankings you been going after and
to your disgust nothing has changed. You're still
ranked a mile from a top ranking. Well hang in there,
it only gets better with time if you stick with it.
In order to compete for a competitive keyword phrase,
in my humble opinion, you need at least a pr5. I have
seen sites ranked very high for some big time keywords
with a pr5. So take your pagerank of 3 and look for
other sites ranked 3 - 5. Remember when you exchange
links to add your keyword phrase in the linktext, this is
very important. The search engines use the link or
anchor text to determine what your site is about. If
you have many links pointing to your site with 'baby
toys', then the search engines will think your site is
about baby toys, even if it has nothing to do with baby
toys! Most search engines are not yet smart enough to
compare the linktext pointing to your site with your site
content, but they are heading in this direction.
So just keep doing this tedious work of building your
link popularity as it will pay off! Little by little
you will climb to a pr5 and above! If you reach a pr5
and have included your targeted keyword phrases in the
linktext of your directory submissions and link trades,
then you should start to see some results.
You will of course need to learn some basic search
engine optimization, but even a novice with strong
incoming links can get those top rankings. So keep at
it and remeber that time is on your side. You most
likely will not get results over night, it will take time
and patience, but results will come if you stick with
it.
